All This I Did For Thee

By Angela Pickinpaugh Kuiper

I sank in despair and loneliness
My heart was burdened with care.
I struggled through life day by day
I saw no way of escape.
Until on life's journey I climbed a hill
And saw a rough old cross.
The ground was wet at the base of the cross
At this I began to wonder
For no other person could be seen.
As I passed by the cross something made me turn
Then a sight met my eyes that broke my heart.
A man so beaten and bloodied you could barely tell he was human.
Then a voice at my side took my attention
"All this I did for thee."
I turned and saw the same man that had hung on the cross.
The bruises healed, the blood was gone.
Yet as he stretched his hand toward me
The nail prints could still be seen.
"I suffered all for thee."
The tears came unbidden but with such force
I fell to my knees at the base of the cross.
"Lord, I can go no farther, my burdens weigh me down."
"All this I did for thee, thy burden is sin, my child."
"My Lord, how do I lighten my load?"
"Accept what I have done for thee and give me thy burden."
"Lord, I can go no farther now. I give my burden to thee."
As I took His hand and He lifted me up
My burden was lifted and I began my journey again.
The way was rough, the mountains steep
But Christ was with me all the way.
As burdens came He took each one
And reminded me with His nail pierced hand
"All this I did for thee."
